What is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is the injection of hyaluronic acid identical to humans into the lips, so that the lips can gain volume and look better. It is a cosmetic procedure and does not require surgical intervention.

What are the properties of hyaluronic acid used in lip augmentation?

  • The most commonly used filler is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide naturally found in the human body as well as in all living things. Collagen can also be used as a filler, but nowadays it is rarely used because hyaluronic acid is safer and lasts longer.
  • These substances have important tasks such as cell division, joint lubrication, and skin elasticity.
  • Hyaluronic acid can hold a thousand times more water than its volume and maintain its shape for a long time at the site where it is injected, so it is the most ideal and most preferred filling material often used in cosmetic products.
  • As this substance is naturally present in the body it does not cause allergies and has no significant side effects and risks.

What are the effects of lip fillers? How do they change the looks?

Lip fillers are applied for the following:

- to make your lips look chubby and plump;
- to give younger look to the lips;
- for lip formation and lip contouring;
- to correct lip deformations.

Anatomically, the upper lip is smaller than the lower lip. The most commonly applied method in lip augmentation is to increase the volume of the upper lip and to give it an aesthetic appearance. It is also used to obtain perfect lip features.

The features of perfect lips are often regarded as follows:

- Well-defined philtrum
- Distinctive Cupid’s bow
- Distinctive vermillion borders
- Volume, fullness in regions marked with '' + ''
- Lower lip about 30% larger than the upper lip

Although the lip structure is more durable than our other organs, it is subject to shape changes and aging over time. Our lips move all the time when we are awake, while talking, laughing, grieving, sighing, they are the most conspicuous part of our face and age in time.

Is Lip Augmentation dangerous? Does it do any harm?

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people in the world have lip fillers done. It is one of the most preferred procedures in our clinic with high satisfaction rates.

According to Realself.com – a website with independent ratings of all customers - the satisfaction rate of those who have lip fillers is 92%.

Side effects such as redness, bruising and slight swelling can be observed depending mostly on the physiological differences of people rather than on where the procedure is performed.

These side effects are observed rarely, not permanent, and go away shortly. Side effects occur more frequently in centers that do not provide appropriate hygiene conditions and do not employ professional personnel.

A Lip augmentation procedure performed by a specialist in a reliable institution is a safe procedure that does not pose any significant risk. Hyaluronic acid injected into the lips is already present in our body.

Will the lips look unnatural after the procedure?

Repulsive images of some celebrities with excessive botox and fillers that appear in the media make people hesitate about this procedure. Their faces look horrible because they get too much substance injected into the application area, much more than is necessary for an aesthetic appearance.

This situation resultsшт dull and unnatural facial expression. Whereas you must have also seen a lot of examples of aesthetic and attractive-looking lips in celebrities appearing in the media with lip fillers, but you cannot tell it as they look very natural.

Every day you come across dozens of people who had their lip fillers done, but you notice it in very few of them, or you look at their lips and wish you had the same.

Another reason for the failure of these procedures is neglecting the overall mouth structure and the ratio between the lips and face structure. The mouth structure, lip structure, and face structure vary from person to person. There is no single filler formula that will fit everyone.

A specialist who performs the procedure should evaluate these variables and provide an aesthetic appearance.

How long does it take to complete the procedure? How long does the effect last?

The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes on average. A control session is usually held 10 to 15 days later to assess the appearance. The effect is clearly visible immediately after the application and the lips look plumper. Depending on the nature of the filler used and the skin structure of the person the effect lasts for an average of 6-12 months.

How is lip augmentation performed?

First of all, you should explain to your doctor what exactly you expect from the procedure and what appearance you want to see.

After you make a decision together with the doctor, local anesthesia will be applied. It can be an anesthetic cream spread on the lip area or injections made in the gingiva. This prevents you from feeling pain throughout the process.

After anesthesia shows its effect, the filler is injected into the middle skin layer with a very fine needle.

Which doctor should perform this procedure?

Lip augmentation should be performed by Dermatologists and Plastic Surgery specialists. Make sure to have the procedure done by qualified and well-equipped professionals. Avoid underground beauty centers. Doctors who apply botox or fillers have to know at a glance the structure of the muscles, facial anatomy, where the muscles start and extend.

If you have any questions ask the specialist to provide you with the detailed information, literally wait for them to enlighten you on the subject, and take your decision only when you fully understand everything.

Can I return to work immediately after the procedure?

Yes, you can return to work if nothing extraordinary happens. Exceptional circumstances are explained in detail in the next question.

You should wait for the anesthetic effect to go away before you eat (otherwise you can inadvertently bite your tongue or your lip).

Who can have lip augmentation? Who cannot have it?

The most suitable candidates for lip fillers are those who have realistic expectations, who know what their lips look like, and who want to improve the appearance of their lips.

It is important to be psychologically prepared for lip augmentation. Even though some people want their lips to look much bigger than normal and very full, they may find the final result quite unpleasant, the so-called ''duck lip image''.

In such a case do not forget that the lip filler is not permanent but a reversible procedure.

Persons with one or more of the following diseases and conditions should not have lip augmentation:

- Blood clotting problems
- Herpes in the mouth region
- Depressed immune system
- Pregnancy and lactation period
- Nerve or muscle disease
- Allergic conditions
- Connective tissue diseases such as lupus

It is important that you inform your doctor if you have a history of herpes or any allergies that you know. Also, do not forget to inform your doctor about any medications you take.

What rules should be observed after the procedure?

Do not rub the application area during 24 hours after the procedure.

- Do not massage the application area for at least 48 hours.
- Do not apply makeup at least 24 hours after the procedure.
- During 1 week avoid hot environments such as sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi.
- Avoid extremely hot and extremely cold weather.
- As the lip augmentation is done with local anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything until your sensations are back in 2-3 hours.
- In 10 days you should come for the check to assess the success of the treatment and side effects.
- If any unexpected effect occurs the practicing doctor should be consulted.
